HOMELESSNESS SUPPORT

Looking for Homelessness support services? the lowdown are here to help! We provide free counselling & advice to young people across Northamptonshire including: Northampton, Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Oundle, Rushden & Towcester.

Being homeless means not having a suitable, safe or permanent place you can call home. It doesn’t only mean living on the streets or sleeping rough, and can include sofa surfing, living in a squat, or using hostels or night shelters.

Sometimes young people feel they have no choice but to leave home because of family or relationship problems. But being homeless affects everything else in your life, including your health and well-being, work and social life and sometimes the ability to get a job or bank account. It’s useful to understand what the law is in relation to leaving home – you can find the legal position for your age at the bottom of this page along with where to get help.

You’re not alone

It’s really difficult to get accurate figures about the number of homeless people in the UK because when shelters and street workers count the visibly homeless, they can’t see the young people who are staying with friends, with extended family or in squats. It’s an issue that affects a lot of young people for a variety of reasons, so don’t feel embarrassed if you are homeless. We are here to help.

We can help

We helped 19 people like you deal with HOMELESSNESS last year. We can provide you with information, advice and a listening ear so you can work through the reasons you are homeless, understand what your options are and have the confidence to tackle the issue.

The law on leaving home in the UK (Feb 2010)

• 18 and over – No permission from parents is needed to leave.
• 16-17 – Permission from parents or guardians is needed. However, if you leave home without it you are unlikely to be ordered back home unless you’re at risk while away from home.
• Under 16 – Anyone under 16 and not in any danger at home cannot legally leave. However, there may be circumstances or situations where you feel leaving home is your only option. If this is the case, please contact the lowdown or Shelter.

Your message is confidential and sent direct to the lowdown's support team.
