SEXTING and PORNOGRAPHY SUPPORT
Looking for Sexting and Pornography support services? the lowdown are here to help! We provide free counselling and advice to young people aged 12-25yrs across Northampton.
Sexting is when you send or receive text, images or video, of a sexual nature on your mobile phone or over the internet. Sometimes these are shared around school or friends without people realising that it is against the law to send or receive images of anyone (including themselves) aged under 18 where they are in their underwear, naked or committing sexual acts.
Pornography usually refers to sexual images and videos found on the internet or elsewhere. It is against the law for people under the age of 18 to view or participate in pornography and it is illegal to be forced to do this, at any age, against your will.
There can be a lot of pressure to join in with sexting and sharing pornography and it can be difficult to say no, particularly if you are put under pressure from friends or your partner. Sexting is widely seen as harmless amongst many young people, but things can quickly get out of hand, go wrong or be taken too far. Once these images or words are out there, it can be very difficult to get them removed, even if you put them there yourself. There is help available if you would like to find out more or if you have concerns about these issues.
You’re not alone
Because almost everyone has a mobile phone and the internet, sexting and pornography are very common and easy to access. You may feel pressured to join in particularly as it can sometimes feel as if ‘everyone else is doing it’. You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable and you do not have to join in if you don’t want to. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about images that are being shared, or about someone asking for images of you, talk to someone about it. There are lots of places that can help you.
