Looking for LGBTQ support services? the lowdown is here to help! We provide free counselling and support to young people throughout Northamptonshire including: Northampton, Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Oundle, Rushden and Towcester.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning issues can be complex.  There are issues around coming to terms with your sexuality and transgender situation (or having the confidence and space to explore it) as well as the attitudes, beliefs and behavior of those around you – at home, school, college, work and in your social life.

trio-outthereIt’s important to understand that your feelings are normal. There’s nothing wrong with being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning your gender or sexuality. Sometimes, those close to you may not understand your feelings or easily accept them, which can make you feel worried or alone.

You’re not alone

On average, 1 in 16 pupils in the UK identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning their sexuality or gender. You are by no means alone, even if those around you sometimes make you feel isolated. There is a lot of support for the LGBTQ community and we are here to help you find it.

the lowdown has set up the OUT THERE LGBTQ Support service, which runs a number of events and campaigns to support the local young LGBTQ community. This includes a weekly youth support group called the OUT THERE Group, which is a youth club for LGBTQ people aged 13–17. We also have a telephone helpline for LGBTQ young people aged 12-25 and a Facebook page keeping you up to date with group activities and events in the LGBTQ world.

Weekly LGBTQ Youth Support Group for 13-17 year olds – the OUT THERE Group

outOur OUT THERE Group is a weekly youth support group for 13-17 year olds. We meet up every Friday from 7-9pm and play games, discuss issues, have guest speakers, feed into positive changes within the NHS and local authority to support the LGBTQ community, and enjoy lots of activities such as film nights, visits to local parks, cake decorating, scrap heap challenge, games nights, theatre trips, prom etc.

We also take part in the Northampton Carnival, the lowdown lantern parade, and one of the annual national PRIDE events. The OUT THERE Group is a great way to meet like-minded people in a safe space and to be free to be who you are.

I’d like to attend the OUT THERE Group – What do I do now?

The group meets every Friday at the lowdown (3 Kingswell Street, off Gold Street, Northampton, NN1 1PP) from 7-9pm, so please feel free to pop along. Doors open at 6:45pm and entry is around the side of the building, through the car park and up the ramp. The group has members who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, straight and those who are questioning their gender or sexuality.
