Counselling Referrals
Counselling can facilitate, support and empower you to make positive changes in a safe, friendly and non-judgemental environment.

Important Information before making a referral:
To book an assessment, we will need:
- Emergency contact details
- The name of your GP surgery – We’ll ask for these if not included at the time of referral.
Eligibility Criteria
We aim to be able to support as many young people as we can, however we do have some eligibility criteria that needs to be met. To qualify for The Lowdown’s counselling service you must be:
We want to help as many young people as possible, however to access our counselling service you must:
- Be age 11-25 and live in the NN1 to NN7 postcode area
(Some exceptions apply – we’ll let you know if we need to refer you to a partner service.) If - If you live outside this area, please visit the REACH Partnership for support close to you in Northamptonshire.
- If you’re aged 8–10, referrals should be made through Service Six. If you’re based in West Northamptonshire, they’ll will send the referral to us at The Lowdown.
How Sessions Are Delivered
We offer:
- Face-to-face sessions at our building
- Remote sessions via video or phone
(For under 16s, parent/guardian consent is required to install Zoom on personal devices). - If someone is referring for you, they must have your consent before doing so.
- If you’re under 13, parental consent is required before an assessment can be offered.
NHS Number

Please Note
We can’t offer counselling if:
- You’re already working with another counsellor or therapist
- You’re currently under a high level of mental health care
But – we may still be able to offer other types of support, so please still contact us.
Confidentiality - what you need to know
Everything you tell us is confidential within our Lowdown services – unless we’re worried that:
- You or someone else is at risk of serious harm
- A serious crime has been committed or is being planned
In these cases, we may need to share information with other professionals to keep you or others safe.

We understand how much of a big step counselling can be. Below is an information pack explaining how to access the building, what to expect when you arrive, and the support available during your visit. It also highlights sensory items and guidance to help you feel comfortable if you are anxious or start to feel overwhelmed.
